In the depths of the Umbral Abyss, a realm of darkness and corruption, the expansion "Eldritch Realms" for Age of Wonders 4 unravels. As an Eldritch Sovereign, players wield formidable powers and face the daunting task of conquering this perilous domain. The expansion introduces a plethora of new features, including a distinct map layer known as the Umbral Abyss, where tactical combat unfolds on unique maps and players encounter enigmatic independent factions known as Umbral Dwellings. These sinister denizens pose a formidable challenge, but those who dare to venture into the abyss can acquire immunity by embracing the Umbral Flesh Minor Transformation.

As an Eldritch Sovereign, players command ancient beings corrupted by the Umbral Abyss, granting them access to a unique Thrall spellcasting mechanic. The choice of path unfolds before them: Domination, Manipulation, or Wild Magic. Each path empowers Eldritch Sovereigns with distinct abilities, allowing them to control their foes, alter flesh, or unleash chaotic magic.

The expansion unveils two captivating story realms, including the return to Athla, where an epic clash determines the world's fate. Syron and Insect Forms join the roster, offering diverse combat capabilities. Standard and Exotic Death Beetle Mounts provide formidable transportation options.

The Cosmic Happenings Event System introduces unpredictable and exciting global events. Four mini crises events, known as the Toll of Seasons, challenge players with unique tactical maps, units, and mechanics. Completing these events bestows the ability to transform heroes into scourges.

Three new Tomes expand the magical arsenal: the Tome of the Tentacle immobilizes and damages enemies, summoning Constrictor units with tentacle arms. The Tome of Cleansing Flame empowers the forces of light to combat darkness, summoning Cleansing Flames to incinerate heretics while protecting the faithful. The Tome of Corruption turns enemies' strengths against them, transforming buffs into debuffs and stealing them for personal use.
