France, scarred by the bloody trenches of World War I, emerged with a profound belief in the superiority of firepower over mobility. However, the humiliating defeat at the hands of Germany in 1940 forced a reevaluation, leading to a shift towards mobile warfare.

In the 1950s, experimentation with organizational structures aimed at enhancing battlefield maneuverability began. The Javelot brigade and the 7e Division Mécanique Rapide paved the way for the standardized Division Type 1967. Yet, economic constraints and the expense of nuclear deterrence hampered the swift realization of these mechanized divisions.

Despite France's withdrawal from NATO's command structure in 1966, a mutual understanding, solidified by joint exercises in West Germany, ensured France's readiness to assist NATO in the event of a Warsaw Pact invasion.

A defining characteristic of French formations in the 1970s was their heavy reliance on tanks, reflecting their intended operational style. Their tactics mirrored those of US Armored Cavalry Regiments or their pre-World War II Division Légère Mécanique, emphasizing rapid movement and disruption rather than holding ground. Mechanized regiments, like the dragons portes of old, aimed to locate, delay, and prepare the battlefield for counterattacks by tank regiments.

However, the 1980s witnessed a gradual increase in the infantry component of heavy maneuver forces. Furthermore, an elite para-commando regiment, consisting of two airborne infantry and one commando battalion, enhanced the Forces Interior.

However, Belgium's equipment suffered from obsolescence. The Leopard 1(BE) main battle tank dated back to the 1960s, while its M75 and AMX-13 Mod 56 APCs, along with its Alouette II helicopters, were relics from the 1950s. A modest re-equipment program in the 1980s brought upgrades to APCs and artillery, increased ATGM capabilities, and modernized much of the Air Force's fast jets. Nonetheless, the Belgian Army of the Cold War presented a unique and challenging force in military simulations.
