About PROXIMATE Game
Investigate a deep-sea lab overrun by a sinister experiment gone wrong in PROXIMATE, a dread-driven narrative adventure where you rely on a glitchy AI visor to survive a 90-minute assignment that could cost you more than just your pay.
The year is 2024, and the world has undergone a seismic shift in its economic landscape. The relentless pursuit of cheaper labor, a cornerstone of global capitalism for decades, has been challenged by a wave of labor rights movements that have swept across India and Southeast Asia. These movements, fueled by the growing awareness of exploitation and the desire for fair treatment, have successfully disrupted the supply of cheap, easily exploitable workers that companies around the world had come to rely upon.
In this new reality, corporations scramble to find innovative solutions to maintain their profit margins. One such company, Neuras, a tech startup based in Melbourne, Australia, believes it has found a solution that is both groundbreaking and ethically questionable. Neuras embarks on an ambitious and daring project, attempting to install artificial intelligence drives into the recently deceased, hoping to create a workforce that is both cheap and inexhaustible. The company envisions a future where the deceased can be reprogrammed and repurposed to perform mundane and physically demanding tasks, eliminating the need for human workers and circumventing the growing demands for fair labor practices.
For a year, the Neuras lab, a remote and secretive facility, dedicates itself to this audacious project, pouring resources and expertise into the development of AI drives that can be seamlessly integrated into deceased bodies. However, the results are consistently disappointing, the project plagued by technical difficulties and unexpected complications. The AI drives, despite the best efforts of the Neuras team, struggle to function reliably within the complex biological systems of the deceased, often resulting in erratic and unpredictable behavior.
Then, without warning, the Neuras lab abruptly cuts off all communication with its investors, leaving them in the dark about the project's progress and the fate of their investment. The silence from the lab is unsettling, raising concerns about the safety of the researchers and the potential ramifications of their work. Rumors begin to circulate among the investment community, whispering of unforeseen experiments and alarming breakthroughs that may have pushed the boundaries of ethical science too far.
Enter the player, a contractor employed by the country's largest investment firm. The firm, concerned about the sudden communication blackout and eager to recover its investment, dispatches the player to investigate the Neuras lab and retrieve the company's intellectual property. The player, accustomed to the demands of corporate assignments, prepares to embark on a mission that is shrouded in secrecy and filled with uncertainty.
The firm provides the player with a cutting-edge piece of technology: the SONA visor, an advanced image recognition device designed to assist in the investigation. The visor, touted as a revolutionary tool for data analysis and situational awareness, is said to be capable of identifying objects, analyzing environments, and providing real-time information to the user. However, the SONA visor, like the Neuras project itself, is not without its quirks.
As the player ventures deeper into the Neuras lab, they quickly discover that the SONA visor is not as reliable as they were led to believe. The visor, despite its advanced technology, provides only the bare minimum of information, sometimes omitting crucial details or offering misleading interpretations of the surrounding environment. The player must rely on their own intuition, observation skills, and deductive reasoning to make sense of the fragmented information provided by the visor and piece together the events that led to the research team's demise.
Adding to the player's unease is a growing sense of dread and the unsettling feeling that they are not alone in the lab. They hear strange noises echoing through the corridors, the sound of breathing coming from behind locked doors, and the disturbing crunching sound emanating from the "ketchup" stain in the corner, as labeled by the SONA visor. The player begins to question the true nature of the experiments conducted at the Neuras lab and the fate of the researchers who worked there.
The player's mission is timeboxed to 90 minutes, a tight deadline that adds to the pressure and urgency of the investigation. The manager, voiced by Luke Austin, provides occasional calls to assist the player, but their helpfulness is questionable. The manager's ambiguous instructions and cryptic remarks often leave the player more confused than informed.
Throughout the investigation, the player uncovers chat logs from the research team, piecing together their conversations and uncovering the growing tensions and ethical dilemmas that plagued the lab. The player encounters a cast of queer characters, whose fates are uncertain, adding a layer of emotional complexity to the investigation.
The narrative unfolds as a dread-driven experience, where the player must confront both the horrors of the Neuras lab and the limitations of their own technology. The line between what is real and what is imagined blurs, as the player must rely on their senses and trust their instincts to survive.
