Radiant Silvergun is an action-packed game set in the future, specifically on July 14, 2520 A.D. The game's story begins on July 14, 2520 AD, when a "stone-like object" is discovered deep within the Earth's strata. However, instead of bringing knowledge or prosperity, this object emits a destructive light that wipes out the entire human race. Only the four crew members of the space cruiser TETRA and one robonoid manage to escape into satellite orbit, narrowly avoiding the same fate as humanity.

Fast forward one year later, and the crew of the TETRA is left with no choice but to re-enter the atmosphere due to depleted supplies. This marks the start of a desperate battle for survival as they fight against the odds.
